“SAFE to receive “One Dime at a Time” from Six Whole Foods Market Stores in Metro Detroit”
DETROIT, MI – July 17, 2013 – From July 1, 2013 until September 30, 2013, Six (6) Whole Food Markets in the Metropolitan Detroit area are supporting Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE) with the Whole Foods “One Dime at a Time” campaign. SAFE was chosen from the Whole Foods Detroit’s store Grand Opening’s charity nominating process.  Whole Foods Markets in Ann Arbor, Cranbrook/Ann Arbor, Rochester Hills, Troy and West Bloomfield stores are participating in this effort to support SAFE.

Whole Foods Market offers a dime credit for every bag shoppers re-use.  This program provides an incentive to eliminate single-use plastic bags and develop stronger communities all at the same time.   From now until September 30th shoppers who bring their reusable bags to any of the six (6) Whole Food Markets in Metropolitan Detroit can ask the cashier to donate the .10 cent per bag refund to SAFE.

SAFE’s mission is to equip survivors of domestic violence with the appropriate financial tools and resources needed to enable women to leave or recover from the economic portion of domestic violence. Whole Food Market Detroit’s generous support will directly impact the lives of survivors of domestic violence in our community.  According to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, approximately one out of every four women will experience some form of domestic violence during her lifetime.  Domestic violence is perpetuated in many forms including physical, emotional and economic abuse.  The economic aspect of domestic violence occurs when the victim is limited or restricted from accessing financial resources.

Whole Foods “One Dime at a Time” program will support SAFE’s efforts to help survivors of domestic violence work toward a brighter future with programs in Job Training, Customer Service, Personal Finances, Networking, Micro-entrepreneurship.  Additionally it will support, SAFE’s annual community event Empowerment weekend which features, SAFE’s O.P.E.N. for Business Conference for Survivors of Domestic Violence and SAFE’s Health & Wealth Expo.

The “One Dime at a Time” program is an easy way for Whole Food shoppers collectively make a huge difference for SAFE and our community.
