Math Camps bring STEM fields to precollege students
By Eric Reikowski, media relations assistant5 Week Math Workshops for Pre-College Students (Grades 7-12) on Saturdays
The sessions employ a “flipped classroom” teaching approach, which features a combination of lecture and hands-on problem solving. Along with quantitative skills, each course covers job-related topics, including communication skills, networking, teamwork, resume writing, professional etiquette, and time and resource management.
“Math is a key foundation for engineering,” said Dr. Lorenzo Smith, professor and associate dean in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. “Those students who have a mastery of math tend to be those who are most able to solve complex engineering and science problems. These workshop courses are specifically designed for serious college-bound students who are seeking additional reinforcement or new material that will challenge their minds."
Pending sufficient enrollment, courses are offered in the following subjects:
- Algebra I
- Algebra II
- Calculus I
- Linear Algebra
- Plane Geometry
- Statistics
- Trigonometry
The five-week workshops will take place on Saturdays from 8-11 a.m. The dates are as follows:
